French Creek Reservation of Lorain County
Many think Ohio has nothing to offer other than cornfields, leading to a dislike of the state for having nothing to offer. I developed this blog in order to combat this idea and show how beautiful Ohio can be, starting with the nature around us.
Just an hour and a half from Tiffin lies our next wonder. The French Creek Reservation of Sheffield Village, Ohio is 450 acres of nature, featuring three creeks and many ties to our early history.
Obtained by Lorain County Metro Parks in the 1960s, the park is one of the largest forested areas in the lake plain of Ohio. Some areas of the park are over 100 years old, while others were reforested after being declared a reservation.
The history of the park goes much earlier, however. Archeologists have found cultural artifacts of Native Americans dating back 1000s of years.
Native Americans used this location because of the three creeks, which offered plenty of fresh water for themselves and crops. However, by the mid-1600s, only a few cultures were left in the northeastern area altogether, which meant the area was uninhabited.
Settlers arrived to the area in 1816, including Captain Jabez Burrell and his family. They settled nearby the creeks and built a brick house, which is now a historical marker.
The Burrells did many interesting things in their time living in the house, including founding a former part of Oberlin College that closed because they refused to ban African Americans, and being a stop of the Underground Railroad itself. When the last Burrell passed away, the house was donated to the reservation and became a permanent feature.
This park is close to my hometown, and is exactly what started my love of the outdoors. While not as ADA accessible as the Cedar Bog, the main path is graveled and easy to stroll through, with several well traveled paths leading to the creeks all throughout the park.
The park is filled with landscapes such as ravines, cliffs, and hills that can be hard to traverse, but the main path is a slow incline for those who prefer it. There are also stairs built in as shortcuts to the parking lots in case someone needs to get out sooner.
French Creek Reservation is not only home to forest and historical landmarks. The reservation also contains several playgrounds and seating areas for families and a nature center.
The French Creek Nature Center is a nice place for younger visitors to learn about wildlife, and older visitors can witness or participate in the French Creek Theatre. There are also programs throughout the year for people of all ages to learn about the world and different parts of nature.
I heavily recommend this park due to its beauty and the rich history available. Come back next week for another recommendation for Ohio's natural wonders.

I'd never heard of this park before! It looks like a beautiful place. If I'm ever in the area, I'll have to check it out! I thought it was really cool that you included some of the pre-colonial history of the area. Too often we know little about Native Americans in this neck of the woods, so it's great to hear some of their history.
